Review

“Showcasing the rise of a generation of cycling superstars, Shoulder to Shoulder explores the peak years of Jacques Anquetil’s career with a restored collection of rare photographs.” ― VeloNews magazine

“The Horton Collection’s lastest masterpiece… is no chronological time lapse of Anquetil’s career and adversaries. The array of photos is more musical, more sweeping. And more shocking… There are moments displayed for which many of us would give an organ to have witnessed first-hand.” ― Red Kite Prayer

"Beautifully reproduced images. The photos are wonderfully atmospheric. Enchanting. There are plenty of action shots, again with excellent detail and beautiful composition. An excellent addition what what seems to have become a Horton Collection series." - Pezcyclingnews.com

“I have spent several hours in deep reverie, slowly turning the pages of Shoulder to Shoulder…Such a compact, bijou, and ultimately desirable book…Brilliant.” – The Washing Machine Post

"Stunning photography from the era." – Canadian Cycling magazine

"With a copy of Shoulder to Shoulder in your lap it's almost like you've been invited to The Horton Collection to see their photos without ever leaving your comfy couch and your Campari & soda." – CycleItalia

“Shoulder to Shoulder is a coffee table book around which groups (or bunches) of cycling enthusiasts will gather to drool over black and white photos from the glory days of competitive racing.” ― Bicycles.net

“These glimpses of cycling in the sixties are welcome, as are the images of the punishing circuits, the mercurial weather, and the crashes that came about as a result of both. But the focus of Shoulder to Shoulder is Anquetil… It all looks impossibly romantic and dashing, which, not coincidentally, was exactly the impression the world was given of Jacques Anquetil.” ― Boing Boing

“The wonderful black and white images capture many action-packed race scenes, scenes of suffering, and scenes of celebration. There are lots of bloodied faces and riders slogging over mountain passes completely awash in mud and slush. There are also many candid moments, some of which are downright whimsical… Shoulder to Shoulder is a beautiful collection that any serious cycling fan should check out. Brett and Shelly Horton should really be thanked for preserving so many rare and iconic images and artifacts from cycling's past, and putting them so lovingly into the hands of bicycle racing fans across multiple generations.” ― Retrogrouch

Sit back and enjoy By Larry TheobaldCycleItalia Imagine for a moment that you had a friend, a guy really into cycling, especially the "Golden Age of Cycling" that we hear so much about. This guy, Brett, invites you over to his house to look at some photos he has. These are not just any photos and Brett's not just any cycling fan. This is a guy who has begged, borrowed or stolen(?) all kinds of cycling memorabilia and he wants to share it with you. With a copy of Shoulder to Shoulder in your lap it's almost like you've been invited to his house to see his photos without ever leaving your comfy couch and your Campari & soda. 106 pages of black & white photos of the greats of cycling are yours to enjoy. Most of these rare photos capture the raw, youthful humanity of these legends of cycling, something that's often lost these days. My only complaint is the notes in the back about each photo. It would be fine if Brett were there with you, sharing a Campari & soda while describing each one, but instead you have to flip back and forth from photo to detailed note/caption. In the 1970s and early ‘80s, southern California was shocked when dead boys began turning up with disturbing regularity alongside some of the picturesque state’s most heavily traveled freeways. Victims of sadistic torture, the dead boys and young men had been raped and strangled, and their untimely deaths were eventually attributed to the Freeway Killer, an elusive psychopath whose trail of death would go down in California history as one of the worst true crime stories in the country. While the Freeway Killer ultimately turned out to be three different men, one of them was truck driver William Bonin, one of the most prolific and sadistic among American serial killers. Bonin usually preferred to work with an accomplice, and the lust killer and his cronies brutally raped and tortured his victims – Bonin loved the sounds of their screams – before strangling them and dumping them on the side of the road like garbage. Bonin confessed to committing 21 murders in the span of just a year, although many experts believe he was responsible for the deaths of many more missing young men. He was executed in 1996, and in this detailed serial killer biography, you’ll learn the background that might offer some understanding of what makes a man go off the rails and become a deranged lust killer. Of course, spine-tingling story of a man whose youngest victim was a 12-year-old who was waiting for a bus to take him to Disneyland might be one that causes you to sleep with the lights on for weeks after turning the final gruesome page.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Oh My Goodness and Hold on to your Hats! This is one story that will fill your mind with dread and haunt your dreams. Yeah Baby! By Rich "William Bonin: The True Story of The Freeway Killer," by Jack Rosewood is a brilliantly presented exposè on the life and times of one of this country's most diabolical and prolific killers. Not unlike Ted Bundy, Gary Ridgway (the Green River Killer), Dennis Rader (the BTK Killer—bind them, torture them, kill them), John Wayne Gacy (the Clown Killer), or more distantly William Bonnie (Billy the Kid), and William F. Harden who killed a man for snoring, this demon incarnate systematically sought out, sodomized, tortured, killed and then disposed of his twenty-one male victims as naturally as taking out a stick of gum. What Mr. Rosewood has done is gone a step further by delving into the inner workings of the serial killer's mind and upbringing—100% of serial killers were either abused, neglected or abandoned, and many do not operate alone. Where does this insatiable need to kill come from? What is their temperament like? Their sexual proclivities? What makes these deadly miscreants so similar and at times appear almost normal? Mr. Jack Rosewood takes into account all of this and more. Just like the men of which he writes, Mr. R takes and deftly spins his literary web trapping his readers no less effectively than the van used by William Bonin. I will have to read the rest of his series—even if only half as good. Well done Mister!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Gory, nasty, ugly, evil criminal conduct--that is what is detailed in this book, then the trial, and punishment of a monster. By Berk Rourke This is a true crime book. It details the horrendous "career" of William Bonin and friends as serial killers. He was called The Freeway Killer among other epithets used by various people. Bonin was truly a monster, an evil man, and that comes home very clearly in the eerie, repetitive telling of the tales of each of his 21 killings (maybe more). This is not a novel, not a story to be taken lightly by the reader. It contains details of the crimes, how they were committed and what the results were of the conduct of Bonin and his accomplices. The stories are grim. They are deeply disturbing to any human being and certainly were to me. I have been a prosecutor of serious criminal cases and have tried murder cases. This one would have been easy to try but horrendous to present in its details to the jury. This is a well written book with an easy to follow style and flow. I would not say it is easy to read. To the contrary. But it is not the style, the flow or the writer's abilities that makes the book difficult, it is the story itself. I give the book five stars as a true crime book. I think the manner in which the story was told was very well devised by the writer. For you grammar Nazis there are a few mistakes of editing but nothing that detracts from the story itself. In sum though I found the reading of the story difficult I did enjoy the book and recommend it to anyone above the age of say eighteen. And I think the advice given to hitchhikers is very well taken.

The Freeway Killer, William Bonin By GA buyer A really shocking book on William Bonin, one of the so-called "Freeway Killer"s that roamed the highways in California, killing young men and boys.. He's surely one of the more prolific ones of that time, confessing to killing at least 21 victims, and it may be even more. He's also one of the guys who killed with different partners at times. Really twisted and creepy.,

A text message hits Seattle Patrol Officer Kel Nyte's phone with a serious threat. Even though she has no authority to investigate a hangnail, she decides to probe the first crime scene off-duty, and falls right into a murderer's plans. Prodded into the pursuit at the business end of a stun gun, anger and humiliation aren't enough to perform an investigation of this scale. On the case, she's partnered with a seasoned detective, but with his stay-the-hell-out-of-my-way arrogance, Kel is forced to investigate on her own. She combs through poetic riddles, and the lesson plans the murderer leaves at each scene. They not only give insight to his motive, but drive her investigation deep into a layered labyrinth of secrets from her father's furtive past and corruption. Dirk, a Police Chief forced to retire due to his terminal illness, has only three months to live, but secrets the murderer reveals about Kel's dad threaten to tear their relationship apart. Just when she suspects her dad is the prime suspect, the murderer's next clues include death threats to her fourteen year-old daughter. Now with a gnat's-breath of time on his clock, no matter what the cost, Kel must find both the killer and the means to stop his rampage before he executes one final lesson.

Jearl has the ability to tempt you with riddles that will have you guessing far into the night. Want to lay there in the darkness, afraid of the nightmares that may probe your mind while you sleep? That’s exactly what you’ll find in Presumed Dead, a thriller that follows Kel Nyte, a Seattle patrol office, as she tries to unravel a baffling crime that is suddenly touching her past and threatening her family. It all begins with a text, with a riddle. The words are haunting and mysterious. “First the one who owes so much. Final payment by my touch. Breath of life fails to draw in. Pillow talk, my lethal sin.” What does it mean? And who would send such a poetic riddle? Jearl Rugh writes: “Her bowels cinched tight as a braided rope. A sudden reflex drew her hands to her face. They slipped over a halting breath, but her eyes stayed fixed on the lines. She couldn’t tear away from the simply rhyme she knew prophesied a future she couldn’t accept. Then a dark dread, icy and resolute, slithered into her mind. My God, he’s here?”On her nightly patrol, Kel Nyte responds to the call and happens to be the first officer to arrive at the murder scene. A woman is dead. The riddle is there for all to find. And Kel is immediately stricken by the fact that the rhyme pattern is oddly similar to the strange poetic puzzles she, too, has been receiving. Is she the next victim. Was there any connection between Kel and the dead woman? Were their lives or their pasts intertwined? Who would want to murder them, and when will the killing stop? Or will it ever stop?Seattle is caught in the vicious web of a serial killer, one who leaves a riddle at the crime scene of each victim. Kel is not allowed of officially investigate the crime, but nothing can stop her from tracking down clues on her own time. Her father is dying, but she fears he may know more than he’s telling her about the murderous rampage? The again, is the killer? Kel is afraid he might be. None of it makes sense for her, and Kel feels she is being slowly drawn into an abyss from which there is no escape. The last riddle she receives threatens her daughter, and Kel will do whatever it takes to probe the mysteries of the night until she finds his identity and puts an end to his killing spree.Jearl Rugh writes tough yet lyrical prose in the style of Raymond Chandler and John D. McDonald. He brings you inside the story and lets you experience the same trials, tribulations, fears, and triumphs confronted by his characters. Jearl Rugh is definitely a novelist making an impact on the mystery/thriller scene.

How do we reconcile joy and sorrow in a world that is both beautiful and desperately broken? Can we put the “human” back into “humanitarianism?” Is there a way to let go of disillusionment, hold onto hope, and redeem our pain for good? Author and non-profit director Katie Bergman explores these questions while reflecting on her geographically sprawling pilgrimage to pursue justice without being crushed by it. Driven by her personal experiences from Cambodian villages to Canadian inner-cities, from courthouses to street corners to orphanages, this book of confessions starts a dialogue about the trials and triumphs of seeking justice. The author's personal narrative weaves in a sequence of coming-of-age stories capturing her journey of learning to grieve without despair, to dream without guilt, and to serve without defeat. She will warm and break your heart with profound stories of intervening in human trafficking in Southeast Asia, teaching children with special needs in rural Mexico, spending austere summers planting trees in the rugged wilderness of northern British Columbia, and backpacking through Eastern Europe in self-imposed solitude. When Justice Just Is provides authentic insight, gripping challenges, and a global perspective of the joys and struggles of humanitarian work as the soul to a fresh conversation of learning to be kinder to the world while also being kinder to ourselves.

When Justice Just Is: Confessing Brokenness, Cultivating Joy, and Creating Space for Authenticity in the Justice Movement, by Katie Bergman

Review "“[A] refreshingly honest and an inspiring read.”"- Idelette McVicker, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of SheLovesMagazine.com"This book [will] benefit those who run non-profits, those who work for them, and those who fund them."” - F. Volker Greifenhagen, Academic Dean at Luther College “"This book will help keep generations of world-changers in the game, instead of tapping out because the struggle is too great.”" - Tim Coleman, Founder & Lead Pastor at Brown's Mill Church"As you read this book be prepared to stop mid paragraph and think deeply. Be open to conviction. Have your pen ready to mark things up. But don't just read this book. Be changed by it."- Kevin Austin, Director of the Set Free Movementsetfreemovement.org "This is THE book I wish I would've read at the beginning of my career. After twenty-two years in the human rights field, I was touched and outraged and humbled by Katie's experiences and her straight-from-the-heart words. She gets the soul of what many of us feel, but few say. This book is for everyone who yearns to make changes in the way we do charity."- Jill Morris, Victims Rights Advocate and Field Liaison for the NO MORE Campaign"Katie Bergman's When Justice Just Is is a compelling read for activists, abolitionists, idealists, and realists alike. Through personal stories and reflections, Katie details her struggle with justice. She describes the vividly known, yet all too often hidden tension between doing what is right and what is just, between justice and mercy, and between charity and compassion."- Keturah Lee Schroeder, Community Support Coordinator for CATCH Court (a restorative justice program for victims of human trafficking and prostitution in Ohio)"When Justice Just Is is a book for anyone who is experiencing their own disillusionment and looking for a way to hold onto hope without letting go of reality."- Beth Clayton Luthye, Anti-Trafficking Coordinator and Communications Manager, Nazarene Compassionate Ministries"Through the pages, I was endeared to Katie's story, contemplative of my own journey, and convicted by her corrective challenges. As she confronts the influence of our romanticized projections, expectations and marketing, she offers space where we can also examine our own attachment with our work. She gives voice to a rare but needed conversation that while still infused with hope, invites greater honesty, reflection and wisdom into the discussion of what it looks like to sustain a life of authentic advocacy."- Kelly Grace, M. Div, MFT, Street Pastor and Director of Set Free Movement Oregon"This is a message for every worker of justice."- Ginger Coakley, CEO of Eden's Glory and Regional Director of the Set Free Movementedensglory.org

The author writes beautifully with an obvious love of justice ministries and asks thought-provoking questions. She clearly has given much time and thought to her stance in this area and is not just another voice in the Christian mission field but rather a woman calling for change at all levels. I recommend this book to all involved in justice ministries, Christian care work of all forms and those planning volunteer work in the humanitarian field.

While the intended audience is for those working in anti-human trafficking, it really has a much wider application. It's extremely well written and very thought provoking. I highly recommend this book.

This is a true story as much about the undaunted character of a man, referred to nominally as "The Gray Wolf" as about the incorrigible life of a prison inmate doing hard time. It is indeed a story of his unbridled defiance and his undisciplined behavior. Yet, he is willing to tell it. His story is about an incredible life's journey beginning as a defiant adolescent, who as a member of a gang in Richmond, Virginia, whose pranks progressed to multiple juvenile delinquent crimes. These juvenile crimes continued unabated and undisciplined and without punishment with no accountability, as they quickly transitioned to larger crimes as an adult resulting in subsequent incarceration and lengthy prison confinement. His journey, as John Bauer tells it, in crime and his prison experiences while impressive are also astonishing. His eventual rehabilitation and ultimate transformation are an incredible story that, amazingly, opened many doors of opportunity later in his life. Where is he now in his life's story after connecting all the dots below the line of his journey is a remarkable path worthy of respect as well as grateful humility. Is the Past Prologue to the future? You may decide after reading the John Bauer story.

While I do not know the writers, I do know the subject of the book, John Bauer III. I have known him about 20 years. I knew much about his past, but I was not aware of every detail, even that was included in this book. I know his current wife Diane, and how they met in California. I am still coming to grips with what I feel as I read some of the many incidents that took place. I have known a few men who had difficult childhoods, mostly those from families that had little education and little financial success. Many sought shortcuts in life usually by running in the wrong circles, choosing the wrong friends and breaking the law. I am convinced that like minds find like minds, when you are going to the wrong part of town, the wrong bars or clubs, you will meet with the wrong crowd. Sometime, before one goes too far down the path of destruction, or crime, sometimes an incident happens, sometimes it must be divine, most likely divine, but something happens to change their path. Johnny came from a family that had economic means, perhaps not the right mix of love, I don't know. I can see some of his mistakes, as he explains them. My biggest difficulty is with those issues, those crimes where physical harm was caused to innocent victims, and it was not at all justified, and this violence, when it was unjustified, I detest and reject it, no matter who does it. While my purpose here to review the writing, not the man, I read a story where a man went down a wrong path, numerous times, where he was punished, where he found the right path, and where he later started on the wrong path again. His romances were intriguing, addictive as they many times are. Redemption for Johnny, did he seek it, did he get it, you will need to decide this on your own.

By Angus Penn A fast paced read delving into the froward childhood of John Bauer III,suffering from what a current court case has defined as "Afluenza". The author leads us along the intractable child's path to manhood; a life of willful contrariness, hedonism and ultimately to the darkness of a prison cell. While this biography, better known in current literary circles as confessional literature doesn't bear witness to Bauer's spiritual conversion , the reader is given a hint of such a probability from the author's Interludes. The Interludes are skillfully placed throughout Bauer's story as quiet, restful oases of introspection and hope.Despite the obvious inattention from the Editor, this novella touching on "man's struggle against man" does hold the reader's attention page after page to a propitious ending on a dance floor, the bright lights of Myrtle Beach and what this reader is left to presume is a "Southern Comfort" life for John Bauer III.

Better Than Fiction By Randy C.Woolard A good true story is one that is more compelling than fiction and reminds us of the consequences of bad decisions. What makes it even better is when we see a man transformed from bad to good in spite of the tremendous odds against his recovery. It's all here. An intelligent, affluent kid chooses a path of crime, eventually lands in federal prison and seeks to redeem himself when freedom rings again. The authors have provided an excellent description of the extraordinary history of John Bauer.(The Gray Wolf). The story also contains details that appear to be minor, but could have easily resulted in different major outcomes. The true story of "The Gray Wolf" would be spectacular on the silver screen. Hopefully, Hollywood is watching.
