In September, 2008, Roanoke, Texas, police discovered a house of horrors: poisoned pudding, a bathtub set up for electrocution, a bloody butcher knife, and a hank of chopped-off hair. The worst was yet to come… Days before, seventeen-year-old Jennifer Bailey, her thirteen-year-old brother David, and their friends Paul Henson and Merrilee White had made a gruesome pact: they’d kill their parents, steal their cars and credit cards, and flee to Canada. Paul and Merrilee’s parents thwarted their fates, but Jennifer and David’s mother Susan Bailey wasn’t so lucky. When the devoted mother returned home from work, her two children and their friend Paul took turns stabbing her and slicing her throat. When they were done, they fled in Susan’s car. They made it as far as South Dakota before being arrested. What really led them to make such a despicable pact? The answers would cast a disturbing new light on the way we see the all-American family, our neighbors, our children—and the society that nurtured them.

It’s hard to grasp that this kind of evil resides in ordinary towns…someone you go to school with, work with, or know as a neighbor. Hindsight is 20/20 and it’s easy to look back and say what SHOULD have been done, what Susan Bailey or the police or school should have done before it was too late. These children planned and committed an unspeakable evil. They didn’t just murder a mom; they killed her in a bloody, tortuous way. She died in agony watching her own kids murdering her. Then they each lied and fabricated their own stories of blame. And while the teens knew enough to try to cover their crime, flee and then lie about it, they still were children in a sense. What adult wouldn’t think out the details of their action? Their plan was to kill all the parents, flee to Canada, get jobs and live happily ever after. How did they think this would happen with no IDs to cross the border and get work visas, no food, no clothing except what they wore, and not a penny to their name? Their empty pockets is what ultimately led to their capture. The tragedy is only made more horrifying by the fact that such evil could live in the hearts of children.Donna Fielder writes the story well. It’s not Ann Rule, so don’t look for suspense and lots of twists and turns. Fielder tells the story in a clear and straightforward way, yet she supplies plenty of detail. It was easy to read in three days.I can recommend the book based on good writing and giving readers a vision of what led up to the crime, an in-depth look at the characters and relationships, descriptive details of what took place, and how the case was investigated and resolved.

The author kept the action, interviews, description of the death very intriguing to where one did not wish to put the book for even a minute for True Crime readers this book should be a huge hit success completely!!!!

By Eddie Wannabee Wanted to wrung their necks, but his proves once again, that there is some very crazy, unpredictable, violent people in this world, that can also be family, which makes it pretty scary. Sad book, a crime that should have been aborted, but like most of real life events, no one did anything until it was too late. The book, for an avid reader of True Crime books, was one more, but must admit that the author knows how to write, and the pictures accompanying the book helped to see the spoiled, killing children these little monsters turned out to be. I am way past shocking, for after reading hundreds of these kind of books, one builds a protective wall for emotional detachment, so give the author its due credit for choosing a real crime story that has all the elements to keep the reader interested. Not the best, certainly not the worst in the long line of true crime books. 3.5 Stars.
