I met him in college, and I fell in love. It was a beautiful love, pure and perfect. Max quickly became everything I could have ever wanted. He was the jock, the popular guy, and I was just Belle-but he made me so much more. He gave me everything I could have ever wanted in life. But one night, one accident changed everything. The man I thought I knew disappeared. I can't tell you the exact moment he fell out of love with me, but he did. I wish I could tell you there was hope. That I hung on. That I fought. I wish I could tell you that we fixed it. But we couldn't, and I ran. In the dead of the night, I packed my things and left him. Five years later, I have returned. He's still the same man I left behind-a deadly underground fighter for the House of Obsidian. He's still dangerous. He's still broken. I still love him. We're both holding a secret, and that secret might just change everything.Contains mature themes.

I wanted to like the book much more than I did. The idea behind the story was good, the follow through wasn't.Max and Belle meet in college. Max is a star football player with an on again, off again girlfriend when he runs into quiet and shy Annabelle. At first they start off friends eventually turning into much more. Eventually marrying, Max starts running his family's club creating a fight club as well while Belle does her own thing. One night changes everything and Max swirls out of control. He drinks, doesn't come home, fights, does drugs and gambles away all their money. Belle knows something is wrong but can never figure it out. One day she goes to the doctors and finds out she's pregnant but there is no money in her account to pay for the visit. She confronts her husband who tells her he doesn't love her, doesn't know if he ever did, and she needs to leave. To protect herself and her unborn baby, she leaves. After five years away, her mother gets sick and she goes back home to care for her. Max knows where she is but never seeks her out. Belle, hearing through the grapevine that Max has changed, starts to think maybe she should not have kept their daughter from him and searches him out. They reunite and it's explosive.*This may contain spoilers but it's hard to hide them when so many of my thoughts surround the choices these two make. So beware.*As much as I love a second chance love story, this was just was a little weak for my liking. The only fault I saw in Belle's plan was not telling Max he had a daughter. I do not fault her at all for leaving him. She should have. He was not husband material at the end. He was selfish and harming her both mentally and emotionally as well as financially. I HATED that he blamed her for leaving and she also accepted she was at fault. He even said that her being pregnant could have saved him. IT WASNT HER JOB TO SAVE YOU, YOU SELFISH ASS.Also his reasons for his downward spiral were weak. Sure it was devastating what happened but he didn't cause it to begin with. I've never been in that situation, but it seemed overblown. Then while they're separated, Max basically reverts to his manwhore ways from college. It's swept under the rug like it's okay because she left but then he becomes a caveman wondering if she did the same thing (she didn't). A lot of time while reading I can deal with double standards but here there were so many and Max just seems so unapologetic for the majority of his actions that I just couldn't.The story unfolded going from past to present and back again. I thought that was pretty well done but the story as a whole wasn't fleshed out enough. Everything was resolved really quickly. I wished for more time to digest everything. More angst. Just more. While the execution of his sorry didn't wow me, I was engaged the whole time. I wanted to see an HEA. The secondary characters were also very interesting and the lead up to the next book has me very interested in what that story will entail.

Sadly this one wasn't one of my favorites. I was really looking forward to this book but when I finished it, I just kind of felt disappointed. I loved the parts where we read about how Max and Belle got together. My problems with this book is when they meet again 5 years later. I felt like all Max wanted to do was blame Belle for leaving and not telling him their daughter. Belle just took all the blame and put it mostly on herself. It didn't sound like Max tried looking for her at all. Not until he knew she was back in town. He was the one who pushed her away yet he didn't try to fight for her either. He gets mad at her with the thought of her sleeping with a guy yet he has been sleeping with other women for the past 5 years. I don't know to me Max wasn't someone I really liked in this book. I did like reading about the early days though. This book did have it moments so if you are a fan of the author I still suggest buying. I really can't wait for Rainer's book!
