Sociedad Deportiva Eibar is the Basque side from a passionate soccer town one-third the size of the Camp Nou. Eibar the Brave tells the amazing Cinderella story of La Liga's smallest club, which has seen Barcelona and Real Madrid playing top-tier football at Ipurua, the 5000-capacity stadium that Eibar calls home. Promotion-party pitch invasions are not uncommon; but the night of May 25, 2014 saw a promotion with a difference, involving a wildly unorthodox club. There weren't enough fans to cover the pitch. The celebration was 45 minutes after the final whistle. The team was wearing their away kit despite having played at home. And Eibar could still potentially be relegated! Having followed Eibar and witnessed the madness first-hand, Euan McTear documents the club's first season in La Liga and discusses all the pieces put into place over the years to make 2014/15 a season like no other.

Excerpt from The OptimistThe ship swung slowly away from the side of the wharf. Several people on board then said, "Well, we're off at last!" to several other people who had only been thinking of saying it.Owen Quentillian remembered another, longer, sea-voyage taken by himself at an early age. Far more clearly he remembered his arrival at St. Gwenllian. It was that which he wanted to recall, aware as he was of the necessity for resuming a connection that had almost insensibly lapsed for several years. He deliberately let his mind travel backwards, visualizing himself, a disconsolate, shivering morsel, being taken away from Papa and Mamma at the very station itself, and put into an open pony-cart beside Miss Lucilla Morchard. The conversation between them, as far as he could recollect it, had run upon strangely categorical lines."Who are you?""I'm Canon Morchard's daughter. You can call me Lucilla.""How old are you?""I'm fifteen, but you shouldn't ask grown-up persons their age.""Oh, are you a grown-up person?"About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. By classicist I'm a fan of Delafield, and this chronicle of how the generations before and after WWI were alienated from each other and tried to find some understanding of each other is right up my alley. Some may find the character of the Canon just too tiresome, but he was so beautifully rendered in all his sometimes-tedious glory and piety, I couldn't stop reading. The detached and priggish main character is also a bit of a trial sometimes, but again, the uncompromising realness of all of the limited people who populate this novel is the book's great strength.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Good characters and one of her stronger novels. By kitz I really enjoyed this, and I'm often quite torn on her novels, being a fan of her diaries. It's not happy, and at first you dislike the 'Optimist", but then as the book goes on, you begin to like him. You also begin to feel less sorry for the children....as being adults it is pointed out it is their choice on how to live their lives (and they manage to do so, some poorly some well). The religious aspect is interesting as Delafield herself had entered a convent at a young age. In the end, the "optimist" of the story gains your sympathy....and you see a bit of why religion plays a big part in helping one through life, and not the fundamentalism of today which is so focused on ME....but a more outward looking religion of hope and helping.

Excerpt from The Adventures of Oliver TwistAmong other public buildings in a certain town, which for many reasons it will be prudent to refrain from mentioning, and to which I will assign no fictitious name, there is one anciently common to most towns, great or small; to wit, a workhouse; and in this workhouse was born: on a day and date which I need not trouble myself to repeat, inasmuch as it can be of no possible consequence to the reader, in this stage of the business at all events; the item of mortality whose name is prefixed to the head of this chapter. For a long time after it was ushered into this world of sorrow and trouble, by the parish surgeon, it remained a matter of considerable doubt whether the child would survive to bear any name at all; in which case it is somewhat more than probable that these memoirs would never have appeared; or, if they had that being comprised within a couple of pages, they would have possessed the inestimable merit of being the most concise and faithful specimen of biography extant, in the literature of any age or country.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Thieves, Murderers and all of their Ilk By Zack Davisson This book surprised me, not by the quality of its writing, which one can expect from Charles Dickens, but by the violent, lusty primal quality of the story. This is no dry musty tome, but a vital novel that arouses both passion and intellect. A literal page turner, I found myself having more than one sleepless night when I just couldn't put it down.Inside are some of the major characters in the realm of fiction; Fagin and his gang of child thieves, including the Artful Dodger. Nancy, the proverbial hooker with a heart of gold. Master Charles Bates (was this a pun even then?) Bad Bill Sikes, who shows the darker edge to all of this dangerous fun, and the innocent, pure Oliver Twist, who is the very definition of nature over nurture.A great book, and one that I am glad to have finally read.

39 of 42 people found the following review helpful. A Page-Turner By A Customer A novel of this size can be daunting for the reader. "If I start this book, I'm going to have to spend the next month finishing it". That's what I thought anyway. But in Oliver Twist I sailed through the pages. It's rare that a classic, and I have read many of them, becomes a page-turner but this one did. Maybe I was lucky in not having seen the film versions prior to the reading of the book because I desperately wanted to find out what happened to Oliver and the multitude of other brilliantly written characters who inhabit the pages of Dickens' classic. The plot is simple. A boy escapes his orphan home to live in London with a group of thieves and pickpockets. He's saved from this depraved life by a kindly, lonely old gentleman. But the villains, Bill Sykes and especially Fagin, fear that the boy may rat them out and so they kidnap him back. Can Oliver make it back to the life he deserves?Oliver's story is not a very originally one, but it is enlivened by some of the greatest characters I've ever seen written. My personal favourites and there are many, are Noah Claypole who becomes a principle player and a very funny one at that, near the book's conclusion; and Mr. Brownlow, who's catchphrase "I'll eat my own head" had me bursting into laughter. The book is diminished by its excessive sentimentality at the conclusion. Its female characters, apart from the courageous Nancy, are written in a golden light so as to become fantasies rather than the gloriously dirty reality of their male counterparts. A sub-plot between Mary and her boyfriend is ridiculously excessive.Against these weaknesses, the book is a triumph of character. Often memorably played on screen, the two villains have become more famous than the title character, who is slightly simpering. Fagin is deliciously smarmy and Sykes is evil incarnate. They get their comuppance in justifiably brutal fashion. Dickens like most of us was a sucker for a happy ending.

But I bought this classic for my home schooling 6th grade daughter, and vowed to read it no matter what. Well, after the first chapter, I was hooked. And she really loved it too. We read it much faster than I had anticipated, considering the language and size of the book. Highly recommended!

Excerpt from Patrick HenryIn this book, I have tried to embody the chief results derived from a study of all the materials known to me, in print and in manuscript, relating to Patrick Henry, - many of these materials being now used for the first time in any formal presentation of his life.Notwithstanding the great popular interest attaching to the name of Patrick Henry, he has hitherto been the subject of but one memoir founded on original investigation, and that, of course, is the Life by William Wirt. When it is considered, however, that Wirt's book was finished as long ago as the year 1817, - before the time had fairly come for the publication of the correspondence, diaries, personal memoranda, and official records of every sort, illustrating the great period covered by Patrick Henry's career, - it will be easy to infer something as to the quantity and the value of those printed materials bearing upon the subject, which are now to be had by us, but which were not within the reach of Wirt.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. There is just enough in this book to encourage me to read further on the myth and reality of Patrick Henry, the fallout with George Washington, and just exactly what was the problem between James Madison and Patrick Henry. This is all briefly discussed in the book. Of course, the book was about Patrick Henry and could not possibly contain all this information. If you want to know just how important Patrick Henry was, and is, read this book. It will start you on a search separating myth from reality.

13 of 16 people found the following review helpful. The most complete view of Patrick Henry's life By A Customer This book was written a long time ago yet is the best reference I've read so far. And the most open minded. It doesn't favor one founding father over another. It states the facts. This is a must for serious students of Patrick Henry.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Adoring Account By VA Duck Governor Henry's papers and various other source material have become available for the first time in 1887 and the author sets about to correct the record as it stands in the few written accounts and only [at the time] biography available of Patrick Henry. The author, Moses Coit Tyler, explains his motivations in his Preface. This is a long-since, out-of-print book that is certainly very much worth your read. Be aware at the onset, however, that history from this period can be saccharine, sometimes to the point of outlandishness. You will be pleasantly impressed with the detail and insight in the early chapters and maybe nonplussed with the author's hyper-adoration in his latter chapters. This author has a point to prove - that being that Governor Patrick Henry is one of the MOST laudable of the Founders. Most 21st century readers are willing to accept their heros bearing the blemishes of humanity: in the 19th century, heros were apparently acceptable only in saintly perfection. Tyler is probably correct in his high esteem for Governor Henry; but, the historian who begins his research with a point to prove, often ends as an author who has sacrificed impartiality, leaving readers unsure of where facts begin and end, or how to refine fact from hyperbole.Much of the appeal of the book is viewing history from a different chronological perspective, but as good as it is...don't let this be your only biography of Henry. You will find a very appealing Patrick Henry with a less mawkish delivery in Thomas S. Kidd's: Patrick Henry: First Among Patriots.-----kindle edition-----Well done, given the analogue to digital transfer process and the editing that goes with it. Page numbers are awkwardly left within the text and while there is a Table of Contents - it does NOT transfer to the kindle's menu choices. Notes are found at the end of each chapter and are properly hyperlinked to the text. There is an extensive bibliography and a very well done, hyperlinked index. At the price ($0) you can't go wrong. e-Book publication quality, ★★★★☆
