"All the more desirable coastal land of the New World had been acquired by the 1840s and ‘50s. The Scots-Irish entered this country through the Mid-Atlantic States rather than New England.  They settled first in Virginia and Maryland and then moved on to Kentucky and Virginia.  Some went further south from there, while others moved west. Raiders and Horse Thieves is the story of my early childhood in Cedar Creek, Texas (Bastrop County), during the final days of World War II. Due to Reconstruction and the Great Depression, economic growth in this central Texas County had been severely restricted. The residents maintained the pioneer values and lived the lifestyle of a much earlier period. This is a true story of the human will to persevere, against Nature and against one another. I describe growing up in a ramshackle old house called The Holcomb Place, in Cedar Creek, Bastrop County. Sad, funny By chas Sad, funny, depressing, uplifting; Raiders and Horse Thieves could be a description of childhood inalmost any rural area of the South or Southwest but this one takes place in 1950’s Texas. If you have driven through a small town you have seen these people; if you have lived in a small town you have known them, but you have rarely seen life through their eyes. The author writes with such a visual style that it paints a vivid image of her environment. The reader can literally see the scenes of her life in three dimensions. This is no sentimental excursion but a blunt, honest description of a childhood made harsh by circumstance and culture. This book is difficult to put down once engaged and triggers many memories not recently tapped from my own early life.

The author shares family and childhood events in the Texas Dust Bowl days. She writes lovingly of her siblings and her mother who is the glue trying her best to hold the family together. The family dynamic is different from that of most of us, but worth sharing.

Jackie's memoir proves the good old days weren't all that great and even without electronic devices our complex family relationships are never simple. And yet, the memory of a mother's love still brings a warm smile to one's face. This is a page turner and a good read.

As usual, when I picked up this newest book, I could NOT put it down.This book appeals to readers of the previous series and new readers alike, as all past occurrences are explained at least briefly. But, you definitely get much more out of this book if you've read the series. I don't say that because it's confusing, but because you genuinely get to watch the characters, who are real people, grow as they age. It makes reading the series so incredibly satisfying knowing that these are real events, and getting to know her family and watch them change.There are many pressing stories that are discussed through this new book, but the most obvious one is the discussion of Raif Badawi. I have been following his story for months and I was very pleased to know the Princess desired action in this situation. You can feel her passion, and sometimes even desperation or sadness, in every word. So long as the princess lives, I will look forward to hearing about her new fights for women's rights and saving innocents from harm.Another reason I love this book is because of how informative it is. Not only do you get captivated by the Princess' personal life, but you also get captivated by real life conflicts that make it so much more interesting and less complicated to understand.If you are a lover of women deserving proper treatment in society, and a lover of a great, and true narrative, I would highly suggest this book!

By marilyn The "Princess" books by Jean Sasson are in my top fifty books of all time. This was not my favorite. The first four had rich stories woven throughout the entire book. This book felt like 30% stories and 70% of explanations of other stuff that felt like a text book. I was looking for stories, so it might have more to do with me than the book because I had expectations based on prior books. I feel terrible giving a low rating. I kept thinking the stories would re-appear.... When the next book comes out, I will read reviews before buying. I never dreamed that I would not LOVE a book in this series written by Jean Sasson!!! Never!

This woman's amazing compassion, courage, and determination to help suffering women throughout the Arab world is extremely inspiring. She is fearless and relentless in her goals and uses her position to fight injustice. Anyone with an interest in human rights will find this book impossible to put down.

Lost in the London streets of a part of the city that he doesn't recognize, lost in his memories, lost in a reality in which fantasies lurking in the dark corners of hi subconscious suddenly intrude physically into his life. He befriends a dog, both a new attachment and the reminiscence of an old family dog.The writing draws from magical realism and surrealism: it's not taking place in the the real world but it doesn't obey any implacable inner-mind logic either, floating as it does somewhere in between.Michael August's excrutiatingly (and, frankly, sometimes annoying) handicapping politeness prevents him from reaching out to passerbys to get out of his predicament. The writing is imbued with tender indulgence for him, like M. Jones from the Bob Dylan song for whom 'something is happening here, but you're not quite sure what it is.'The enigma that's laid out from the start is whether he's doing it all on purpose. Is he caving to some latent death wish or is it the exact opposite, a man who's been lost for years and finally wants to be found, to fall up, to give in to a life wish? It unfurls at a dreamlike pace, hinting at terrible appetites and unsuspected motives. As I neared the end of this read, I found that it didn't matter if Michael August was going toward something or running away from painful memories: his quest is the universal hunger for meaning.There's also a backstory about the burgeoning love of an amateur artist for his model, which upends the notions of observer and observed, until the backstory flows into the main story and fits in a vital piece of the puzzle.In the end, the story, moving incessantly back and forth in time to draw a picture that stands just out of time, resonates. We're all Michael August, or at least we've been this guy before.
