The # 1 Sport Autobiography of 2015 in paperback.

It's an unlikely footballing fairy tale. Born in Sydney to a Samoan mother and Londoner father, Timothy Cahill grew up in the sprawling western suburbs, where cricket and rugby league ruled. It was a long way from his father's beloved West Ham and the English game that transfixed a young Tim with his own unlikely dreams of one day playing professionally.

Growing up in the 1980s, life for Tim was about family, football and more football - training, playing and watching it with his brothers. Beginning as the youngest and smallest boy on the field, Tim steadily worked his way through the local club sides with an on-field toughness and intelligence that made the unlikely a possibility.

By the time he was a teenager, Tim's parents boldly applied for a bank loan to fund his travels to England. It was an act of faith repaid with a successful trial for Millwall, the storied London club. After 249 appearances and 56 goals and cult-hero status among the fans, he signed for Everton, where he would enjoy a highly successful Premiership and stellar international career - leaving the legacy of becoming one of the most admired and respected Australian sportsmen of all time.

With his trademark honesty and candour, Tim reflects on what it takes to make it to the top - the sacrifices, the physical cost, the mental stamina, the uncompromising self-belief, but also the loyalty, the integrity and the generosity. An autobiography that is more than a record of the goals and the games, Tim Cahill's story is a universal reminder of the importance of making your moment count.

'I can't remember a time when I wasn't dreaming of football ...'

By Jeannie Palmer Like a movie unfolding across the big screen, London Bridge lures the reader into a war of terrorism that casts a dark pall upon Europe, overshadowing an age of innocence. A true, literary work of the highest caliber, London Bridge is a pulse pounding thriller and only Doc, a U.S. field analyst, and his partner, Zita, an M16 agent, can unravel a terrifying plan. This mesmerizing masterpiece is loaded with action, intelligence, social and political issues wrapped up tightly with a fantastic plot and great writing. A must read book for the discerning reader.

An American is the prime suspect and Chief inspector George Trubell is in charge of a case that would rock London. Author Paul Hollis tells his tale of a terroristic plot that would cripple London and its community. Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips are targeted in a failed kidnapping plot. The authorities are on high alert. A senator is killed and the investigation has the search for the American in full alert. Little do the authorities know and the American is in the middle of this is trying to unravel the mystery him self. The Americans girl friend – Zita gets caught into the game. Another kidnapping and another senator is taken captive.Paul Hollis writes his story beautifully. His intricate plot will have you on the edge of your seat. His descriptions are so vivid He writes…The man ran down through a gully and scrambled up the other side. Undergrowth tangled his legs. He tripped and fell twice but didn’t stop. Thorns and sharp branches ripped at his clothes, tearing flesh from muscle beneath the thin cloth. Blood streaked his face and hands. He kept running. He also writes…“I stumbled across something and fell to the sidewalk. My lungs were going to burst, I needed to breathe. I sucked in hot dry air and opened my eyes for a second. Smoke hovered three feet above my head, rolling over me like thunder clouds.Watery sludge oozed like flowing lava through cracks in what was left of the front wall. A heat bubble flared across the surface as it ran past my feet. I dragged a shoe back to avoid it. Window glass scraped the sidewalk under my sole. Bits of glass were scattered everywhere, reflecting the sun’s rays back toward heaven. He then writes…Painful promises and desperate pleas were scrawled along the canvas. Repeat a lie long enough, it becomes politics. Kings and queens steal your dreams. Head filled with elsewhere, heart filled with troubles. Is there any life before death?Paul Hollis incorporates a unique style of writing that intrigues and pulls you into the story. But there is also a sense of humor in his dialogue. He writes…“As soon as I walked in, I saw Kenneth Bunney bent so low over a beer I thought he might be using his nose as a straw.”“I don’t want any Chinese whispers here. I’d just as soon shoot you right now and dig the bullet out so the rats won’t get lead poisoning.”The story concludes in a climactic finish that is simply explosive. The American and Zita get entangled in a climactic finish that you simply don’t want the story to end. I highly recommend this book – London Bridge is Falling Down; an intricate plot on terrorism. Paul Hollis is a master at what he writes!

In their third critically acclaimed collection of original fairy tales for adults, World Fantasy Award-winning editors Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling present 21 new stories by some of the top names in literature today. Dark, disturbing, and delightful, each story was written expressly for this superb collection of distinctly grown-up fantasy―a brilliant companion volume to Datlow and Windling's acclaimed anthologies, Snow White, Blood Red, and Black Thorn, White Rose.

From Publishers Weekly Datlow and Windling, winners of a World Fantasy Award for their annual Year's Best Fantasy & Horror, score again with this third entry in their provocative volumes of original, updated fairy tales for adults. The collection, which gathers many impressive names from the field of dark fantasy, also contains introductory essays and extensive suggested reading lists. Highlights include Tanith Lee's "The Beast," a disturbing but all too believable vision of psychopathy and art, and a rather different take on art's worth in an even more unsettling story by Garry Kilworth ("Masterpiece"). Joyce Carol Oates offers an exceptionally surrealistic version of the Sleeping Beauty myth, while Roberta Lannes contributes an exceedingly amusing variation on "The Shoemaker and the Elves." The late John Brunner is represented by a masterful fable that employs Chinese myth, an evil emperor and all-powerful dragons, and Nancy Collins creates a wonderfully folksy atmosphere with her Kentucky-set yarn about fear and common sense. Though the collection skews slightly toward tales of damsels in distress imperiled by evil males (it's notable that only six of the 22 stories are by men), it triumphantly concludes with Delia Sherman's uplifting fable about redemption, nobility and friendship. Like its predecessors, Snow White, Blood Red and Black Thorn, White Rose, this anthology is a must for those who believe that "once upon a time" means now. Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal From Roberta Lanne's upscale retelling of "The Shoemaker and the Elves," in which an ambitious cockroach lends his entrepreneurial talents to a Manhattan tailor ("Roach in Loafers"), to Ellen Steiber's moody tribute to Japanese folklore ("The Fox Wife"), the 22 original stories and poems in this collection bring a modern twist to classic and sometimes obscure fairy tales. Like its predecessors Black Thorn, White Rose (AvoNova: Morrow, 1994) and Snow White, Blood Red (Morrow, 1992), this volume explores new interpretations of old themes. It offers a fresh look at tales no longer for children only. Suitable for most libraries' fantasy or short story collections.Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist In this editorial team's third anthology of original short fantasies based on traditional fairy tales, the writing is consistently of very high quality. Indeed, so high that it constitutes justification for the book all by itself. Readers should skip the introduction, though, in which Datlow and Windling grind their pet axes, and be aware that the stories are best read in small doses, for literate though they are, far too many of them struggle to make old tales fit the procrustean beds of modern psychology. The stories that avoid this, most notably Nancy Collins' "Billy Fearless," are substantially more readable. But the whole volume still will reward connoisseurs of superior literary fantasy prepared to slog through psychobabble and political agendas. Roland Green

18 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Writing as Rich as Rubies, as Dark as Death By A Customer "Ruby Slippers, Golden Tears" is the third book in a series of short story volumes edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling, all inspired by classic fairy tales. The genre of fairy tales tends to be seen as literature for children, but Datlow and Windling point out that this is a modern view - the early versions of the tales were often dark, adult and brutal, and they have invited authors to reinvent the tales with an eye on their origins. The resulting stories cover a variety of styles and genres, from the humour of Roberta Lannes' "Roach in Loafers", to the disturbing horror of Anne Bishop's "Match Girl". This is very much an edition for adults, not to be mistaken for children's stories, and Match Girl (based on Hans Christian Andersen's "Little Match Girl") may be too much for some to stomach. Nevertheless, as the author points out, the instruments of torture described have all been invented and used by humankind. Some of my favourite stories in this volume are Joyce Carol Oates' haunting and moving "The Crossing"; Neil Gaiman's poem "The White Road" - "Mr. Fox" with a twist; and Tanith Lee's "The Beast", an unusual and erotic version of "Beauty and the Beast" with more than a touch of "Bluebeard". But the book is full of gems, some fantastical, some darkly disturbing. Lovers of fantasy should lap it up, and anyone who has enjoyed the previous volumes of the series will find more delights in store for them here.

26 of 29 people found the following review helpful. Not my favorite By Kelly (Fantasy Literature) I didn't like this as much as _Black Thorn, White Rose_ or _Black Heart, Ivory Bones_, but it wasn't bad. Add a couple of stars for the stunning novella "The Fox Wife", set in Japan, and for the lush and horrible "The Beast," the dark tale of a beautiful man who is not what he seems. Subtract a few for a pair of stories I heartily disliked--"The Match Girl" which seemed an endless litany of pain and torture, and "The Masterpiece", which is well-written but will forever haunt me. I can't believe the heroine could have made the choice she did at the end of this take on "Rumplestiltskin." Yes, that's probably the point, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. the best, so far By EmBee I love the whole Windling/Datlow edited series of fairy tale short stories. This particular book is by far the best one I have read (and I've read them all, to date, Jan 2004). Ellen Steiber's "The Fox Wife" is the best short story I've read in awhile - well worth repeated readings, and even led me to seek out more oriental "fox" tales. Joyce Carol Oates, Neil Gaiman, and Jane Yolen are here, and the editors, for this one collection, have abandoned their informal trademark touch of including that one truly odious story. ALL the stories are of high quality, and if you are a devotee of this genre, you MUST read this one. It's really the best of the bunch! Five stars!

About the Author Dan Rafter is working with the underlying themes that people like about her music and the way she presents herself: glamor, identity, the lure of fame, the malleability of gender, irony in modern society. It's a first-year psychology textbook, yes, but it has more to do with Lady Gaga and her success than knowing she went to NYU, and it's presented in a way that actually layers it into a fictional narrative. And that makes it easily the smartest biography Bluewater's produced.

14 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Snide & Catty By Barbarianz Who says women are catty; obviously liberals are, too.To start with the good - a much better picture is on the cover than what Amazon shows and the artwork is well done.As for the rest of my review, I will start by saying the story is really not about Palin, but about the author himself and how he tries to deal fairly with a strong woman figure who sees the world differently than he does. It is obvious that he does not understand the conservative mind, nor does he attempt to. Therefore, he is unable to give a fair portrayal of the type of person or accomplishments of his subject. Instead, he tries to turn every positive attribute into a negative, snide analysis.Unfortunately, what he misses is that some of us out here grew up much the same way as Sarah Palin did (except for the opportunity of moose hunting), and we value those small-town requirements of having to be accountable for our behaviors and works, which makes us work harder and stand firmer in our determination to maintain who we are. Maybe if he would actually go to the heart of America instead of just flying over it, he would see the millions of young, independent women who are growing up just like Sarah Palin, and who are still capable of throwing a good hip block in basketball or wiping out a second baseman to prevent a double-play in softball. Maybe then he could see women as capable of stepping into leadership with more than just the "acceptable" liberal degrees or words or political positions.I would not recommend this as reading material for young children as they would not understand the sarcasm the author attempts, nor would they find a story to pique their interest. It might be acceptable for high schoolers as a discussion tool, but they would probably not find it very interesting as a story.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Liberal Propaganda By Robert Stifler The review above is spot on. This is a very lazy attempt at profiling one of the most courageous women of today. The author clearly opposes everything conservatism stands for and does not even try to see life through different eyes. If you are looking to get a little insight of Sarah Palin I would NOT recommend this at all. Lazy and slanted.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Educational comics rock! By Amazon Customer The Female Force graphic novel series has covered influential women "who are shaping modern history and culture," So, I've talked about my obsession with educational comics here before. I love comics as an art form and a communication tool. And I love following Blue Water Comics' Female Force series, in which the biographies of famous women are told in words and pictures. The series really shines with its political figure titles, which offer a balanced look at their subject matter. And that has to do with the writer, who authored most of them. Aside from the Female Force titles, they're releasing other biographical series that make for interesting reading.

By Lynchburg Mama - Shelly Every once in a while, a book comes along that makes me think about my life – I mean, deep down, soul searching kind of thinking that leads me to make a positive life change. This book challenged me to think about my relationship with my husband and our marriage. Just like with Kris and Jake, every couple faces hardships but this couple is put to the test, brought to the end of recovery road and tested again. As an individual, this book really makes you think about what a true sacrifice for those whom you love means. I was challenged by thinking about what I would do in the situation and honestly, I can’t answer that with a satisfactory response. The vivid imagery made me pour buckets of tears one moment while smiling and rejoicing in the next. Even if you’re not a “spiritual” person, this book will take you on a spiritual journey like no other. I did not read the first book, White Night, so it was a little hard to follow for a bit but I quickly picked up on the story and was immersed to the point of no return. I couldn’t put it down until I turned the very last page. It touched me so deep that I immediately went to my soul and had a long, hard talk.I won’t go into any deep details but this is so much more than a romance book about a couple who faces a hardship. If it doesn’t move you, then I don’t know what would! My shortcomings came to light and I am doing what I can to make sure that my husband, my children and my friends all know how important they truly are to me.I received a free copy for reviewing purposes but that did NOT affect how I feel about this book. Seriously, GO READ IT!!!

Kathi Haacke Morehead challenges this concept in her book, Eternal Dawn. Kris and Jake are soul mates who are repeatedly tested. As they face each challenge head-on, they are forced to re-examine their own lives and beliefs. Lessons abound around every turn. It’s a gripping, emotional read that sucks you into their story, while also making you think. I challenge anyone to read this without starting to analyze their own lives. Just be sure you have a box of tissues with you as you do it.This book is a follow-up to White Night. The lessons actually begin in that first novel, so it is recommended that you start with it to reap the full benefits.I received a copy of the book for review purposes only, positive review was not required.

The book was very thought provoking but also very down to earth. I became part of the story and the characters became like family. I laughed with them, cried with them and felt their pain. It began as the perfect life/love story and quickly became everyone's worst fear! It is really about complete selfless love. Kathi Haacke Morehead certainly has a way with words. She held my interest with each page, and it never wavered. I look forward to more books from this exciting new author!
