Educational opportunities were few and far between for rural Kenyans living under British colonial rule in the 1940s. For women, such opportunities were practically nonexistent.

As a young girl watching over her father’s cattle, sheep, and goats, Madam Leah longed for an education. At thirteen, she made the daring decision to pursue learning, despite the odds in her way.

Her age and gender were obstacles. Her impressive height led to bullying and teasing from her fellow students, but Madam Leah persevered. She valued education too much to fail.

Triumphs of a Herd’s Girl recounts Madam Leah’s journey from humble goatherd to teacher, eventually serving twenty years as headmistress of a local primary school, cofounding women’s organizations, and helping needy children receive the education they so desperately needed.

Catherine Makhanu, Madam Leah’s oldest daughter, remembers her mother in this inspiring memoir: A woman who ensured her seven children all received college educations. A woman who was an exceptional farmer, teacher, and humanitarian. A woman who began as a young girl watching over her father’s herds and dreaming of a better life.

Generally speaking, it seems the more different they are from us–the more exotic–the more fascinating we find them. Even more so when we scratch the surface to look beneath and find not more differences, but similarities instead. Making us realize that we are all far more alike each other than we are unalike.Take, for example, Leah Makhanu, who began life in Kenya as the daughter of a respected man, who, while he loved his girl, did not see the value of educating her because she was more valuable to him tending his herds, which she did with great skill. But Leah knew what she wanted–an education–and despite the sizable obstacle of her father’s resistance, she went after it, letting nothing stop her until she had achieved what she set out to do. Her determination eventually gained her a loving partner in marriage, a large family, a position as a schoolteacher and later headmistress, and made her co-founder of more than one women’s organizations. That’s a story worth sharing, which her family has done here in loving memory of their late mother. While I can’t necessarily relate to all of Leah’s best qualities (I am not the exemplary cook, homemaker, and businesswoman she was reputed to be), nor her height (she held her head high at over six feet tall), I can certainly admire them. On a broader level, I appreciate the snapshot Leah’s story provides of the changing cultural landscape in Kenya (and, as we know, in many other African countries). These changes recognize the value of girls beyond domestic duties and childbearing, seeing the vast potential that results when we educate them and allow them to chase their dreams. Toward that end, Leah’s story inspires me and gives me hope for the future of our world. While this book is billed as a biography, it is more accurately a collection of memories from family and friends. While Triumphs of a Herd’s Girl will certainly find its most captive audience in those who loved her best, I (an outsider) am nonetheless grateful for this glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman. The capturing of Leah’s story in Triumphs of a Herd’s Girl is most certainly a labor of love, and–though unreservedly revealing their affectionate bias–it provides a fine tribute to a woman whom was admired and respected by many. Thanks to the author for providing me a free copy to review. All opinions are mine.

Excellent uplifting story By ebomb143 "Triumphs of a Herd's Girl" is a novel about a seemingly normal girl, Leah, growing up in Kenya whose job was to herd goats. Unfortunately for the goats, Leah had bigger dreams, much bigger. Leah didn't want to be a goat herder all her life, she had dreams of achieving an education. Madame Leah paved the way for future children in her village and because of this book I am sure she has reached many others with her inspirational story. This story is an uplifting journey on what you can accomplish if you want it bad enough. Leah just wanted more in life and she was able to find it due to her unbreakable spirit. I would recommend this book to anyone, especially if you are feeling a little down and want a little girl power. This book will most definitely make you want to do something great with you life. Catherine Makhanu thank you for sharing your mother's beautiful story with us.I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
