Journal of an Unknown Knight is Jose B. Alejandrino's memoir. It follows his journey from his school days at an English boarding school, his work at UNESCO, his family life in France, his return to Manila following the assassination of Ninoy Aquino, his work at the Manila Chronicle and as Presidential Assistant for Economic Affairs to President Fidel Ramos, to the challenges and spirituality he encountered on his move to Spain. For the first time, he reveals stories about the Fidel Ramos Presidency, which he had been asked not to write about during that time. Following an early fascination with the Knights of the Round Table, he describes his life as a journey of a knight who quietly serves other people, and along the way, he discovers what it truly means to find his Holy Grail. The book details his life as a man who follows his principles: selflessly serving the Filipino people and being a man of faith.

Life of Service and Honor By Cheryl Toliver In his autobiography, Jose Alejandrino reflects on how the quest for the Holy Grail in the Knights of the Round Table tales, stories he learned and came to love as a young student in England, became a metaphor for his life - a life of morality, honesty, moderation, and honor in his service to the world while working at UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and in the Philippines as a journalist, political activist, and presidential adviser.Born in 1944 in Thailand to a Filipino family of Jewish-Spanish origin, which converted to Catholicism after migrating to the Philippines, Alejandrino takes us through his world travels and varied life, admitting his failings, while opening readers to an inside view of world politics from the Vietnam War into 2008. Especially interesting is his narrative of events in the Philippines from 1983 through 1998, covering the civil disobedience movement that eventually toppled Ferdinand Marcos, the presidency of Corazon Aquino, and the election and presidency of Fidel Valdez Ramos.Throughout his life, Alejandrino has used his uncanny skill at analyzing situations to predict feasible (and many times accurate) outcomes. In his later years, upon becoming a born-again Christian, he considers this skill as a gift from God and has come to see how God has blessed him throughout his life. He closes his journal with some intriguing predictions of what the world may face in the next few years. This is an excellent read for anyone interested in learning about world affairs from a distinct and broader perspective than is usually available in the US.Cheryl Ann Toliver, author of Wilderness Refuge: A Prophet's KingdomWilderness Refuge: A Prophet's Kingdom

By Juliann Troi, The Journal of an Unknown Knight by Jose AlejandrinoThe Journal of an Unknown Knight is an inspiring portait of a man with an ideal and the moxy to pursue it, of a man in the right positions at the right times to have profound influence over his country's government and even world affairs. Mr. Alejandrino impressives, not only in how well his story is written, but in his unique vision of a world that should be Camelot and how skillfully he maneuvered behind the scenes attempting to make it so. His philosophy that "life is full of risks" and his efforts to overcome a "culture of fear" by fighting against corruption and making bold attempts to fix a broken system are nothing short of heroic in scope. His story has everything: intrigue, revolution and redemption. Bravo, Mr. Alejandrino! Well done!

An Epic Journey by a True Knight By Ila France Porcher, Author of The Shark Sessions "The Journal of an Unknown Knight" is Jose Alejandrino's story of his life, focusing on his extraordinary career. Beginning in earliest childhood, he describes his unusual and dramatic experiences in meticulous detail. He grew up as the son of a diplomat, and so the people he knew were politicians, with their friends and families. His accounts of this environment are surprising and often funny. He gained valuable experience in different countries, always rubbing shoulders with the most influencial politicians and their entourages. He worked in UNESCO, where he learned, among other things, the ins and outs of International Finance, and then returned to his native land, the Philippines, to help re-establish peace and democracy when President Ferdinand Marco's policies led to severe trouble. The description of how he handled the situation there reveals him to be a very astute diplomat. He worked behind the scenes in a variety of roles, including as a journalist, influencing important people and events. Thus he was a powerful force in keeping the Philippines evolving in a postitive direction through the election of Cory Aquino, her presidency, and then the presidency of Fidel Valdez Ramos. The story of how he left, due to his refusal to sacrifice his high moral standards, is a startling tale of contorted financial, religious, and political dealings. Alejandrino ends the book with a thought provoking commentary on life in general in a troubled world. This book will doubtless go down in history as one of the most detailed and important accounts of Philippine history during the period he describes. For everyone interested in the Philippines, and America's foreign affairs with the country, it is a must read.
