Son, Husband, Father, War Hero, President of the United States At 12:30 p.m. on November 22, 1963, John Fitzgerald Kennedy was assassinated. More than half a century has passed since that fateful moment, yet so many questions remain unanswered. Lone gunman? Conspiracy? And then there is that one big question: Does it still matter? Let’s say you are a talented movie director, and you announced you are making a movie about how the Holocaust wasn’t real, or the Civil Rights movement never happened. There would be demonstrators in front of your studio protesting your movie because it is an abomination of history. When Oliver Stone made JFK, there weren’t any such protests. There were some columnists who wrote that they thought it was bad history, but there was no public outcry. That’s because the Kennedy assassination has passed from history into entertainment. It’s like a board game, ‘Who killed Kennedy?’ That’s unfortunate. Through a series of interviews with key experts and researchers in the Kennedy assassination field, author Jacob Carter offers readers the unique opportunity to take a fresh look at one of the most pivotal moments in American history. Interviews included: Jefferson Morley David Talbot Dan Hardway David Scheim Dr. Robert McClelland Anthony Summers Gus Russo Dale Myers Max Holland Gerald Posner John McAdams Judge John R. Tunheim Bonus: First time ever published letter of Antonio Veciana admitting he saw Lee Harvey Oswald with his CIA handler in Dallas only months before President Kennedy's assassination. By Okie Wobbly Even though I 'm not the demographic Mr. Carter is aiming for exactly (I'm 76+) and I guess I belong to the "conspiracy camp", I must say this is a very heartfelt, balanced;, informative collection of interviews and short essays collected by the author which present all sides of the controversy without judgments. Several of the "lone nut" writers seem clearly relieved and grateful to be given the time and space to expound without criticism from the author who pretty clearly doesn't agree. This is an original contribution to the growing body of JFK assassination literature, meant to stoke the interest of millennials and younger folks in general in history and its relevance to our times. Hopeful, patriotic, passionate but not naive. Good tonic for all ages. Just get involved and make up your own mind, Jacob pleades..

Although Jake Carter comes from the conspiracy camp, he sets that aside as he brings in some noted researchers from both sides of the aisle to discuss an aspect of the case. The questions are straight forward and allow each of the interviewed subjects a chance to provide their insights. It is a very good primer for one who is attempting to get both sides of the story and would be a useful addition to any class attempting to discuss the topic of the JFK Assassination. Only one critique, it should have been longer.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Great overview of Lone Assassin vs. Conspiracy By Gerald Posner In Before History Dies, Jacob Carter has managed to do something quite rare: write a fresh book about the JFK assassination, a book that he correctly describes as a “research tool for people who want to study history on their own terms.” Mr. Carter is not trying to solve the case. Instead, he splits the book evenly between 12 leading researchers/authors, half setting forth the case for a conspiracy and the other half contending it was only a single assassin. I am one of those included in under Mr. Carter’s “The Lone Assassin Theory.” I can attest to the accuracy of the interview he includes in Before History Dies. Mr. Carter allows each of his interviewees to talk at length, without editing the responses to favor one or another view of history. His balanced and even-handed approach is one of his greatest strengths. Before History Dies is targeted towards a younger audience, one that has no living memory of JFK’s assassination. But I think this fine book should find a wider audience, not only with those interested in the murder of Jack Kennedy, but even with journalism students and historians who want to observe how it is possible for 12 smart researchers to study a subject in depth and to split into diametrically different camps about what took place on November 22, 1963. That is the challenge, always, as with every controversial area of history. And it is illustrated very capably in Before History Dies.
