About the Author Colette Holbrook Sheets, Ph.D, is a direct descendant of Mormon pioneer Joseph Holbrook and was raised in the Mormon tradition. She earned her doctorate in Clinical Psychology and specialized in the treatment of trauma. Her novel, based on Joseph Holbrook's handwritten journal, examines the emotional effects of the Mormon trek to Utah.

Joseph Holbrook, raised mostly by grandparents in NY, had strong family loyalty and good, solid values. As an adult he became a Mormon, and with this community traveled to Navoo, Illinois and eventually to the Salt Lake Basin in Utah.. Always loyal to family, he took his mother, siblings, and children along. They endured terrible hardships. In this story, we relive this time in American history when many people feared the Mormons - their huge numbers and different religion were threatening. In Navoo they had to flee quickly, leaving behind homes and possessions and their temple. In Winter Quarters in Nebraska they dealt with prairie fires, Indians who stole their cattle and horses, little food, and harsh weather. Their strong faith and their sharing of resources and community support kept them going. As each group left for the Utah Territory, they left crops in the fields and homes for those arriving to Winter Quarters.This story, based on the journals of Joseph Holbrook, is a real life tribute to a strong man. It may be especially interesting to those of us who enjoy genealogy and who have pioneer ancestors.

A true family saga ripped from the pages of the authors' Mormon ancestor's dairies detailing their personal experiences in making the trip - beginning in New York through Missouri and finally to Salt Lake City. This reader could almost feel the agonizing heat of that summer, the fear of potential Indian attacks along the way, and the overwhelming grief due to the sickness and death of members of several families while in route, Most of the trip was accompanied by constant, driving gritty dust storms settling on their sweaty bodies, in their mouths in their teeth. Surely the trekkers felt they would never again be clean. A riveting story penned in gratitude by a loving great-, great-, great-granddaughter.
