Outside, the skies had decided to open and they battered the countryside with a torrential rain. The country roads in and around TinkerHill Falls didn't get much in the way of traffic. Nelson had no intention of taking any risks and bringing forward the fate of his death-row passengers, so he proceeded cautiously into the night. All was going well until suddenly, and quite unexpectedly, a spiraling spade smashed through the windshield. It sliced the side of Nelson's head, clipped Mike's shoulder and then, with its continued momentum, sliced deep gashes along the heads of four prisoners who had tragically been seated in the seats behind Nelson. A short distance away by the dense forestland stood a huge figure in an orange jumpsuit that was quickly being swallowed up by William Johnson's suede jacket. Sporadic flashes of moonlight splintered through the leaves, showing the giant form perching a cowboy hat upon his head before melting into the surrounding trees. The Ancient Lawman was born.

Light On Characterization - Heavy On Gore By Darcia Helle I read Partners In Crime by this author and enjoyed it, so I was quite surprised at how much I did not enjoy this one. The book starts with a short prologue taking place in 1656, which is intended as a lead-in to the present day story. I was taken aback when, in two instances, the author used modern day references that simply didn't exist back then. In one sentence, he has reporters from local newspapers scribbling in notepads. In another, he compares the wielding of an axe to a batter in baseball. I almost stopped there, and perhaps should have. But I'd borrowed the book for my month's Prime read and felt I needed to give it a fair chance.Unfortunately, the rest of the story, which takes place in the present day, didn't work for me either. First, I didn't like any of the characters. Though perhaps that's not fair, since I didn't have a chance to really know any of them. The narration constantly jumps between a large number of characters, many of which are minor and didn't need POV parts. Consequently, we have no clear sense of who these people are.We have many scenes that are heavy on the gore. The problem for me here wasn't the violence itself, but that the graphic scenes were all that was driving the story. There was, for me, a major lack of any real substance. As the police chase went on and the intended victims were ripped to pieces, I kept wondering where all the other town people were. No one got caught up in the madness, no one was on the streets, no one called the police in a panic over all the murders. The place was like a ghost town. It felt too scripted and intentional. The one token sex scene felt totally out of place given the circumstances. The build-up between the two characters was nonexistent. The aftermath from this one sexual encounter also felt wrong, too overblown given what seemed to be a quick hookup between people who barely knew one another. In the end, I didn't find much of anything to like about this story. If you're looking for a quick read high on the graphic gore, then this might work for you. If you're looking for a story that can hold itself up without all that, then you probably want to look elsewhere.

This is the second book of his I have read, have loved both of them. This book starts out in 1656, with a lawman that is executioner of the guilty. His means are very much filled with gore. He has a special way of knowing who the guilty are. Then the book moves on to present day and FBI agent Lucinda Ackerman, who is transporting a convict to death row when a terrible accident happens. During this episode something terrible is unleashed into the town of Tinkerhill Falls and the killings and stalkings begin. Can Lucinda figure out who is doing the killings and stop him?I really enjoyed this book. It held my attention throughout and was filled with gore and tension. I only had one disappointment, poor Foster, was hoping things would be different for him. :-( Guess you will have to read to find out what that was.I was given a copy of this book from the author to read and review. Big thanks to Ian for letting me read this.5 out of 5 stars. But their executioner, an ex-lawman it seems, is no ordinary man. He's vicious, brutal, and can smell guilt. When the blood and body parts stop flying... but that would be telling.Tinkerhill Falls, present day, a murderous serial killer and arsonist, Theodore Stone, is being transported by FBI Special Agent Lucinda Ackerman to his execution. An accident allows Stone to escape with a hostage. Ackerman's rescue attempt goes pear-shaped and... but that would be telling too.Let's just say, old lawmen never die. And, while revenge may be a dish best served cold, it doesn't hold a candle to vigilante justice, here served coldly, quickly, and relentlessly. Ian David Noakes' novel is a mystery, a thriller, it has some laughs, and it spans the ages, but make no mistake about it, readers, The Ancient Lawman is first and foremost a gory horror novel. Don't pick it up looking for depth of character, moving dialogue, and great moral truth, you'll be disappointed. If, on the other hand, you come ready to be freaked out, if you fasten your seat belt and shout, "Do it to me!" Noakes obliges, with relish.I received a copy of The Ancient Lawman from the publisher in return for an honest review. I enjoyed the book and give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
