A charming account of a boyhood summer in rural Ireland By Joe fogarty Gallivant is a word that’s used often in ‘Scenes from an Indian Summer.’ Adults use it when speaking to young Jonno, the narrator of the book, and his friends in The Valley Gang, when they reprimand them for spending their days ‘gallivanting’ around the countryside. I have to confess that I looked up what gallivanting meant. ‘gallivant’ as to ‘go around from one place to another in the pursuit of pleasure or entertainment.’ So, it’s a fairly appropriate word to describe what Jonno and his friends got up to most days for the duration of their summer holidays. The amazing thing about their gallivanting is that they have the freedom to do it, most parents today would have search parties out if their children wandered off into the countryside in the way that Jonno and his buddies do in ‘Scenes from an Indian Summer.’This book is set in a small Irish town in 1963. Although it seems like further back in time than that what with people still going around on donkeys and carts and families using buckets for toilets. Poverty and emigration are rampant.I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this recreation of what it was like to have been a boy growing up in a small town in Ireland in the 1960s. Some of the colloquialisms used by the characters were slightly puzzling but did not interfere with the overall enjoyment of a delightful account of an Irish boyhood summer. Simply a must read!

The story focuses on one summer holiday in particular, and follows the adventures, discoveries and growing pains of the boy and his friends. The author conveys a strong sense of nostalgia for the 1960's, and the period of innocence and wonder only the young have. These warm feelings are contagious; a truly charming read.
