Review

"A very engaging book filled with a sense of time remembered accurately and of people remembered, for the most part, with affection."—Forum for Modern Languages

From the Back Cover Although world-famous for his novels Sister Carrie and Jennie Gerhardt, Theodore Dreiser was also highly accomplished in journalism, autobiography, and travel writing. In 1919, having recently accepted the publishing contract of a new publisher, Dreiser proposed to publish a "book of characters" that would collect twelve biographical sketches of individuals who were major influences on Dreiser, both as a man and as a writer. The resulting narratives combine the best attributes of the character sketch, the autobiography, and the short story into miniature masterpieces of prose. The men profiled in Twelve Men are a diverse and colorful group: from Dreiser's equally famous brother, the song-writer Paul Dreiser's ("My Brother Paul"), to the entirely obscure railroad foreman Michael Burke ("The Mighty Rourke"), on whose work crew Dreiser had labored in 1903. The twelve narratives are compelling portraits of the men portrayed, but they also reveal many insights into Dreiser's own life and work.

About the Author Theodore Dreiser (1871-1945), American novelist, was born in Terre Haute, Indiana, and attended Indiana University. He began his writing career as a newspaperman, working in Chicago, St. Louis, and Pittsburgh. His first novel, Sister Carrie (1900), was purchased by a publisher who thought it objectionable and made little effort to promote its sale. With the publication of The Financier in 1912, he was able to give up newspaper work and devote himself to writing. He became known as one of the principal exponents of American naturalism, and in 1944, he was awarded the Merit Medal for Fiction by the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Interesting snapshots about people in his life By Shirley Peel I enjoyed this non-fiction book by Theodore Drieser. It tells about twelve vastly different people who had some kind of lasting effect on him and his life. I found it particularly telling that at least two or three of his novels are based very closely on real life events and people he knew. If you are a fan of Mr. Drieser, you would probably enjoy the insight you get from reading this book.By the way, his brother wrote the Indiana state song using some casual suggestions from Mr. Drieser.
