A unique novel that explores the effect Aspergers has, not only on the individual, but on the family unit as a whole. Sophie needs to find a way to balance the chaotic route she has been forced to walk down... a son she cannot control – diagnosed with Aspergers and PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance), coinciding with the onset of raging hormones; a daughter she has to ensure gets attention so she doesn’t feel left out; and an ex-husband who comes and goes as he pleases. At the same time, Sophie struggles to hold down her job as an interiors writer for a magazine. Her rambling house is in desperate need of upkeep – her garden is full of overgrowing plants; there’s no end of laundry, cleaning and cooking and there’s not nearly enough money. Only wine, chocolate and good friends keep Sophie from tipping over the edge. That, and the mysterious voice of her cyber love. Could he be the saviour she’s been waiting for? Or has he been in front of her the whole time? Told from the perspective of a mother who has to battle through life on a daily basis – fighting hard to keep her son in school, dealing with her marriage breaking up, giving her daughter her attention, maintaining her job and exploring her future love life. Sophie’s Throughway is a heartwarming read, written to inspire empathy and compassion within the reader, as well as increasing understanding for a condition that does not have enough public recognition.

Sophie is dealing with her own set in a socially challenged son, a spouse who couldn't handle their son's special needs and split, and her own day-to-day struggle to keep it together. I got to ride the ups and downs with her to gain a deeper insight into parents who face such incredible difficulties. After that, life looks pretty sweet. This is a shorter novel, easy to enjoy and feel like you're actually making progress rather than one of those that drags on forever. It's a sweet story with as many ups as downs, and a very realistic look dealing with children who don't fit into the nice package society expects.Definitely recommended.Content warning: Mature themes. Language: Sophie's son uses quite a bit of it including derogatory terms, socially unacceptable names, and significant swearing--all part of his condition. Drug use: Again, a realistic glimpse of what often happens when adults aren't looking. Romance: One scene where the door doesn't close soon enough to call it "squeaky clean."

Seeing her juggling the real world issues of work, kids, and romance made the book easy to immerse myself in. Her son's struggles with his challenges and the impact on Sophie's life were touching and heartbreaking at times. The issue that I have with this book is that I want more!

By Maxine (Booklover Catlady) This book was written with an easy style and thereby very easy to read, I whizzed through it and it would have easily have been a five star read except for two aspects of the book that just did not sit right with me:1. The book ended so suddenly with a lot not wrapped up that I thought it was a print error, it's like reading a book that has another few chapters that did not make it to the print version, it really needed a stronger ending.2. The teenager with Aspergers in the book is portrayed predominantly in the negative and some of his behaviours and responses to his parents at his age are just crazy. I can speak from experience as I am a mother of an Aspie teen son who is the exact same age and also have Aspergers myself. It portrays young people with Aspergers as aggressive, rude, full of cursing with no respect for anyone and I have managed to teach my son all of these things are wrong using consequences = lesson to be learnt. I just get sad that the positive side was not shown. The book could have been a total winner, the plot is good, it's mostly realistic with what a family would be dealing with although the amount of kick-offs going on might be more relevant to a younger child with Aspergers. I really felt the mother in the story just let him get away with so much and with teens on the spectrum you need to set very, very firm boundaries and stick to them. Then they grow into young men who know where the boundary line is. I was wanting to sit down and give her a hug and talk through things. I totally got her frustration and tiredness as I felt that a lot with my son in his younger years. There are some really funny moments in the book, the characters are crisp and clear and I could not stop reading it. It was a book I should have given 5 stars to. But I just can't. Perhaps I have more of an eagle eye on it because of my own life experience but I would hate the world to think that most teenagers with Aspergers behave like the boy in this book! They get enough negativity in the media about being violent and aggressive and it's just not the majority at all. Come and meet my son, he is the opposite in his behaviour. So, kind of frustrating for me, I liked it but could not love it so 3 stars from me.
