Living in Gottschee as a child, Emma would never have imagined that she would someday live in America and have such a wonderful husband and family. She has often told her stories to family and friends. Her husband would always say that no one wanted to listen, but she knew differently. Her accent led people to ask, "Where are you from?" The answer to that question led way to one or more of her stories. Her husband would sometimes interrupt her which prevented her from finishing, hence the title. Her stories as a child are heart warming, humorous and sometimes sad.

I never even heard of Gottschee until a few years ago even though my maternal great grandparents came from there. Their granddaughter, my mother, never mentioned the name. It was either, Austria, Austro-Hungarian Empire or Germany when asked where her grandparents were from. I do not think she knew either. Look it up. It no longer exists. After WWII it became part of Slovenia and during the war it belonged to Italy. The story above is an example of what the residents of Gottschee went through at the insistence (lies) of the Nazis. I read everything I can find about Gottschee and this story is not as bad as some I have read. After the war they had no home. The Slovenian hated them and many died on the trek away from where they had been sent. They were starving and homeless. We sometimes think the Jews are the only ones who suffered at the hands of the Nazi regime, but if you search hard enough you will find stories of the everyday german citizen who suffered also and the Gottscheers. But it is not talked about like the Jews suffering is talked about. This story shows the true strength of the human spirit when hit with adversity. I think when you have gone through what this woman and her family went through, you appreciate more just how great America is.
