By Caroline Greene Margaret Fletcher has crafted a reflective and empowering memoir that is sure to touch your heart. Written as a love letter to her grand-daughter (with a reply from her grand-daughter at the end!) this beautiful book reminds us all of what is it in life that truly matters. Margaret boldly tells her story - the good, bad and ugly - so that those of us who read it can be forever transformed, as we remember what is and is not within our own control as women, daughters, wives and mothers. I highly recommend this book!

It will remind you of your own relative's struggles and help you to have a new view on things they said and actions they took. It will take you back to your own childhood with tenderness and likely bring up memories of your own that you had long forgotten. In our technological age, we have moved further and further away from our own human stories. Margaret Fletcher brings back a sense of that thread of human triumph over struggle that we read about heroes from days gone by but often lose in modern families that tend to be spread out all over the globe. What a gift she has given to her granddaughter and to all of us. Thank you Margaret!

Written as a love letter to the author’s granddaughter, the book is an honest account of what it was like to grow up in the 1940s and 50s when no one talked about things like mental illness and when girls – even highly intelligent, talented girls – weren’t encouraged to do more with their lives other than get married and have children.The author, who as a little girl performed surgery on chickens’ necks and went on to become a renowned head and neck surgeon, writes so honestly and guilelessly about her own eventual struggles with depression, alcoholism, and rheumatoid arthritis.Her’s is a triumphant story, but most importantly it’s real, honest, and unflinching…Dr. Fletcher ultimately teaches that it’s truly up to each and every one of us to take responsibility for our own amazing selves.
