Excerpt from The Street Called Straight a NovelAs a matter of fact, Davenant was under no illusions concerning the quality of the welcome his hostess was according him, though he found a certain pleasure in being once more in her company. It was not a keen pleasure, but neither was it an embarrassing one; it was exactly what he supposed it would be in case they ever met again - a blending on his part of curiosity, admiration, and reminiscent suffering out of which time and experience had taken the sting. He retained the memory of a minute of intense astonishment once upon a time, followed by some weeks, some months perhaps, of angry humiliation; but the years between twenty-four and thirty-three are long and varied, generating in healthy natures plenty of saving common sense.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It wouldn't be surprising if you didn't know the answer; I didn't, prior to looking up a list of the best-selling books of 1912. He was an Anglican rector (per Wikipedia) who retired due to poor health and went on to write a series of novels, including the best-selling The Street Called Straight. This novel is a little morality tale focusing on Peter Davenant and Olivia Guion. Several years before the story began, Peter loved Olivia and proposed marriage to her; after her disdainful rejection, he went away to become a self-made wealthy man who has retired and found the life of the idly wealthy to be a bore; he wants to get back to earning a living and doing good deeds. The opportunity presents itself when Olivia's father faces jail and financial ruin after embezzling some funds he was a trustee of. For Peter, this is an excellent way to do good and get rid of most of his money in the process (which he'd rather not have). He offers to loan (or maybe gift, since he doesn't expect repayment) the father the money to repay those he stole from. This leads to a series of complications, as Olivia doesn't want to feel indebted to Peter. Additional complications arise when Olivia's fiance, Ashley, a very proper British colonel arrives on the scene. Marrying a woman touched by scandal can harm Ashley's career, but so can abandoning her; furthermore, Ashley resents a virtual stranger coming to the rescue. This leads to many discussions (perhaps too many) between Ashley, Olivia and Peter as well as other characters, as everyone tries to do the right thing and finds that there is no easy resolution. One of King's strengths is that his characters are not one dimensional: for example, Olivia may seem shallow and prideful at first, but she has more depth than it may be first apparent. On the other hand, the debates the characters have around the central issues seem to go on longer than necessary. Generally, however, this is a good book, focused on a set of dilemmas that arise when a good deed creates possible ill effects.

Woman American socialite (and none-too-interesting character) Olivia Guion is all set to have the Wedding of the Year to a British war hero when she learns dear old daddy has been embezzling funds and may face jail time. When old flame Peter Davenant comes to the financial rescue, Olivia decides to switch grooms in midstream. Because why marry a war hero when you can bag a millionaire? Amiright?Yeah, you know I'm right.
