Excerpt from Hans of IcelandWhat is your opinion, Neighbor Braall?""Miners are mad," replied the fisherman. "A fish cannot live out of water; a man should not dive into the bowels of the earth.""But," objected a young man in the crowd, "if to secure his betrothed, it were necessary for Gill Stadt to work in the mines?""We ought never to expose our lives," interrupted Oily, "for the sake of matters of far less importance. A fine dowry Gill has gained for his Guth!""Did this young girl drown herself in despair, on hearing of her lover's death?" inquired another."Who says so?" exclaimed a soldier, roughly, who was passing his way through the crowd. "I knew the girl well; and she was certainly engaged to a young miner, who was crushed to death by the fall of a rock, in one of the subterranean galleries of Storwaadsgrute, near Rœraas. She was also the mistress of one of my comrades; and the day before yesterday she was venturing secretly to Munckholm, to celebrate with her lover the death of her betrothed, when her boat struck on a rock, and she was drowned."A confused hubbub of voices arose, in the midst of which the old woman exclaimed:"Impossible! brave sir."The young ones remained silent. Neighbor Niels maliciously recalled the fisherman's remark:"That is where love leads to."The soldier was getting seriously angry at the old women's incredulity. He had already called them "a parcel of old witches from the Cave of Quiragoth," and they were not disposed to endure so gross an insult, when a sharp and commanding voice put an end to the debate, exclaiming:"Silence! silence, you old dotards!" All became silent; as the cock's crowing causes the hens to cease their clucking. Before picturing the remainder of the scene, it would perhaps be as well to give some idea of the place in which it occurred.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Hans of Iceland (Classic Reprint), by Victor Hugo

About the Author The best-known of the French Romantic writers, Victor Hugo was a poet, novelist, dramatist, and political critic. Hugo was an avid supporter of French republicanism and advocate for social and political equality, themes that reflect most strongly in his works Les Mis?rables, Notre-Dame de Paris (The Hunchback of Notre-Dame), and Le Dernier jour d'un condamn? (The Last Day of a Condemned Man). Hugo s literary works were successful from the outset, earning him a pension from Louis XVIII and membership in the prestigious Acad?mie fran?aise, and influencing the work of literary figures such as Albert Camus, Charles Dickens, and Fyodor Dostoevsky. Elevated to the peerage by King Louis-Philippe, Hugo played an active role in French politics through the 1848 Revolution and into the Second and Third Republics. Hugo died in 1885, revered not only for his influence on French literature, but also for his role in shaping French democracy. He is buried in the Panth?on alongside Alexandre Dumas and ?mile Zola.

Yarnell Victor Hugo's first novel revolves around the son of the viceroy of Norway (Ordener Guldenlew), his friendship with a political prisoner (John Schumacker), and his secret love affair with the prisoner's daughter (Ethel). When a plot surfaces to bring about the death of Schumacker, the former chancellor, Ordener risks his life to save his friend and his love. Everyone seems to cross paths with the infamous brigand, Han of Iceland, who does not seek to help either side, but takes pleasure in killing everyone he meets. As a result, this book is rather gruesome, but very suspenseful. The romance between Ordener and Ethel was intriguing as well, especially considering the sacrifices they made for each other. While this work does not measure up to Les Mis or Notre Dame, an average Hugo novel is still better than almost anything else out there.

Neary I know that critics throw rotten cabbage at this book, but I find it charming and refreshing, with all of its imperfections and brutalities. This is the essential Hugo - NOT "Les Mis". Let's face it, Hugo is a romantic, and all of his attempts at realism and psychological accuracy have led to nothing but boredom. He tries the high moral ground in "Les Mis". The book came out tedious and preachy. "Hans of Iceland" offers the same kind of absurdity and brutality as "Notre-Dame de Paris" and "The Man Who Laughs".

It is SIDEWAYS.Assuming you have an edition that is right side up, Hans of Iceland is actually a lot of fun. It was one of Hugo's first novels, and he acknowledged its failings. It is a silly novel about a larger-than-life bandit who wanders around the mountains of Iceland and encounters all the other characters. There is a lot of swearing by obscure, possibly made-up saints in a long-winded manner. I read it in high school and thoroughly enjoyed it.
