This insightful novel walks its readers through a young girls' journey of the realization that she is poor. She has to face the reality that even though she is poor, not everyone else in the world is. She begins putting together the pieces of how poverty really works, why generation after generation suffers from poverty and why many people around her still do not recognize there is a world outside of their own where poverty does not live.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Thoughtful, sensitive exploration of what it means to grow up in poverty By Anna Erishkigal This is a thoughtful, sensitive exploration of what it's like to grow up poor in America, written from the first-person POV of a little girl. It starts off written in the innocent, young voice of a little girl, moves through the loss of innocence of an older girl into the sulky resentment of a teenager, and into the determined voice of an adult seeking to make their life better to escape the trap of multi-generational poverty. Unlike many books of this type, while the girl-narrator leads us through her unpleasant situation and gives us hints she's aware there are people more fortunate than she is, this book lacks the entitlement-mentality or race-bating that often makes such books unappealing to the audience who needs to read it most, people who wish to understand.I would recommend this book as a required and/or supplemental reading text for a college-level sociology course, for social services professionals (especially those who work with children), and anybody struggling to get out of poverty who needs a role model.
